IELTS – SPEAKING – PART 1 – Question Type 1

TYPE 1
Basic Description Questions

Example: “Tell me about your hometown.”

Remember the examiner doesn’t want to know about your hometown. They actually want to know about your English ability.

Simple Answer: band score 4.0 – 5.0

“I come from Hanoi. I am native of this city. Hanoi is the capital of my country. In Hanoi there are many historical buildings and signature dishes. Pho is very famous – I always eat it with my friends.”

  • too short and direct answer
  • No linking words, phrases, idioms, redundant language
  • Structure, grammar and vocabulary are basic.

Try this structure:

  • Opening phrases:
Well, first of all, I’d like to start by telling you that I come from Ha Noi and I have lived here all my life, although at the moment I’m studying in another city.
  • Linking phrase – Point 1:
The first thing I would say is that it’s absolutely enormous, maybe even one of the biggest cities in South East Asia I guess. It’s so big in fact that even the locals have problems finding their way around.
  • Linking phrase – Point 2:
Another significant characteristic is that it offers examples of both classical and  contemporary architecture. Actually some of Vietnam’s most renowned landmarks are “slapbang” in the middle of Hanoi.(Slap bang is used in expressions such as slap bang in the middle of somewhere to mean exactly in that place.)

PRACTICE 1:
Let talk about your favorite holiday

Tell me about your house.

A semi-detached house một ngôi nhà có chung tường một bên với nhà khác
A terraced house một ngôi nhà riêng biệt
Looks out onto (the garden) (căn phòng) nhìn ra khu vườn
On the right side of (the house) (căn phòng) nằm bên phải (căn nhà)
Catches the afternoon sun đón ánh nắng buổi chiều
